Tank Setup
- Tank size: 10 gallons for 6. They are extremely active swimmers and need horizontal swimming space despite their small size.
- Flow: Moderate โ they enjoy swimming against current
- Lid: Important โ zebra danios are jumpers when excited or startled
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 65โ77ยฐF โ one of the widest temperature ranges of any aquarium fish
- pH: 6.5โ7.5
- GH: 5โ19 dGH
Extreme Hardiness
Zebra danios are often used to cycle new tanks because they tolerate ammonia and nitrite better than almost any other species. While this isn't a recommended practice (fishless cycling is better for the fish), it speaks to their incredible toughness. They tolerate temperature swings, pH fluctuations, and less-than-perfect water quality that would stress most species.
GloFish Connection
Zebra danios are the original GloFish species. The fluorescent genes (from jellyfish and coral) were originally inserted for scientific research โ to create fish that glow in the presence of environmental toxins. The ornamental fish hobby adopted them as novelty pets. GloFish danios have identical care requirements to standard zebra danios.
Tank Mates
Good with most community fish. Their speed and energy can intimidate very slow or timid species. Avoid keeping with long-finned, slow fish like bettas โ while danios aren't true fin nippers, their constant zooming can stress calm fish.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are zebra danios good for cycling a tank?
They can survive it, but fishless cycling is always preferred. No fish should be subjected to ammonia and nitrite exposure intentionally. If you must fish-in cycle, danios are the most tolerant species, but monitor water parameters closely and do frequent water changes.
