Tank Setup
- Tank size: 5 gallons minimum per snail. They produce significant bioload for their size.
- Lid: Essential โ mystery snails climb above the waterline to lay eggs and may escape open tanks
- Calcium: Alkaline, calcium-rich water is crucial for shell health. Add cuttlebone, crushed coral, or wonder shells.
- Filter: Cover the intake with a sponge pre-filter to prevent snails from getting stuck
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 68โ82ยฐF
- pH: 7.0โ8.0 (acidic water dissolves their shells)
- GH: 8โ18 dGH (high mineral content is essential)
- KH: 5โ15 dKH
Acidic or soft water will erode their shells over time, creating pits, thin spots, and eventual shell collapse. If your water is naturally soft, supplement with calcium.
Diet & Feeding
- Algae: They graze on tank surfaces but won't eliminate heavy algae blooms alone
- Vegetables: Blanched zucchini, spinach, kale, cucumber โ their favorite foods
- Protein: Sinking pellets, algae wafers, occasional frozen bloodworms
- Calcium: Cuttlebone (leave it floating in the tank), calcium-enriched snello (snail jello)
Breeding
Mystery snails lay distinctive pink/white egg clutches above the waterline (on the tank lid, rim, or exposed glass). Each clutch contains 50โ200 eggs that hatch in 2โ4 weeks. If you don't want babies, simply remove the clutch before it hatches.
Tank Mates
Compatible with almost all community fish. Avoid loaches (which eat snails), pufferfish, and large cichlids. Assassin snails will also prey on mystery snails.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my mystery snail dead or sleeping?
Mystery snails can remain inactive for days. Gently smell the snail โ a dead snail has a strong, unmistakable rotten odor. If there's no smell and the trap door (operculum) is closed, it's likely resting.
