Tank Setup
- Tank size: 15 gallons minimum for a group of 6
- Substrate: Fine sand is essential — kuhli loaches burrow and sift through substrate. Sharp gravel will injure them.
- Hiding spots: Lots of caves, driftwood, PVC pipes, and dense plants. They hide during the day and emerge at dusk.
- Filter intake: Cover with a sponge pre-filter — kuhli loaches are known for squeezing into filter intakes
Behavior
Kuhli loaches are nocturnal and you may rarely see them at first. This changes dramatically when they're kept in groups — with 6+ kuhlis, they become much bolder and will even come out during feeding time. Single kuhli loaches are permanently stressed and hidden.
Tank Mates
Compatible with virtually all peaceful community fish. They stay at the bottom and are completely non-confrontational. Excellent betta tank mates because they're nocturnal and stay out of the betta's way.
