Overview & Origin
Staurogyne repens was discovered in the Cristalino River in southern Amazonia, Brazil, and was introduced to the aquarium hobby in the early 2010s by Tropica. It belongs to the family Acanthaceae (same as Hygrophila/Water Wisteria) and quickly became popular as an easy, compact foreground plant.
S. Repens doesn't form a true carpet in the way Monte Carlo or Dwarf Hairgrass does — instead, it grows as compact, bushy clusters that spread gradually through side shoots. The result is a dense, hedge-like foreground with more height and structure than flat carpet plants, which many aquascapers actually prefer.
How to Plant
- Preparation: Separate tissue culture or potted portions into individual stems with roots.
- Technique: Plant each stem 1–1.5 inches deep in substrate using tweezers. Space about 1–2 inches apart.
- Substrate: Nutrient-rich aquasoil works best. Inert substrates supplemented with root tabs also work.
- Patience: S. Repens is a slow starter. It may not show visible new growth for 2–4 weeks after planting. Don't move or adjust it — let it establish.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 68–82°F (20–28°C)
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- KH: 1–8 dKH
- GH: 2–10 dGH
CO2 & Fertilization
S. Repens works in low-tech setups but shows markedly better results with CO2:
- Without CO2: Grows slowly but stays healthy. Bushy foreground coverage takes 2–3 months.
- With CO2: Faster growth, denser coverage, and more compact form. Full foreground coverage in 6–8 weeks.
- Fertilization: Root tabs are important — S. Repens is a moderate root feeder. Supplement with liquid fertilizer for column nutrients.
Trimming & Shaping
S. Repens benefits from regular trimming to maintain a compact, bushy shape:
- Trim tops when the plant exceeds 3–4 inches to encourage lateral (side) shoot growth rather than upward growth.
- Replant the cut tops to expand coverage more quickly.
- Over several trim cycles, S. Repens develops into a dense, hedge-like foreground — one of the most attractive low-foreground looks in aquascaping.
Common Problems & Solutions
- Growing upward instead of spreading: Trim the tops to encourage lateral shoots. Also ensure adequate light — under low light, S. Repens reaches upward.
- Yellowing lower leaves: Normal as the plant puts energy into top growth. Ensure adequate root nutrition with root tabs.
- Slow initial growth: Normal — S. Repens is a slow starter. Give it 3–4 weeks of stable conditions before worrying.
- Uprooting during planting: Use fine-grained substrate and plant deep enough. A thin layer of sand over the roots can help keep newly planted stems in place.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is S. Repens a carpet plant?
Not technically — it doesn't form a flat carpet like Monte Carlo or HC Cuba. It's a compact foreground plant that creates a low, bushy hedge 2–4 inches tall. Many aquascapers prefer this look to a flat carpet.
Does S. Repens need CO2?
No, but it benefits significantly from it. Without CO2, growth is slower and the plant is less compact. With CO2, results are noticeably better.
How long does S. Repens take to fill in?
Without CO2: 2–3 months for a filled-in foreground. With CO2: 6–8 weeks. Plant densely from the start for faster coverage.
