Coloration
Pet store rainbowfish are often disappointing โ juvenile and stressed fish show pale, washed-out colors. Don't judge the species by what you see at the store. Males develop their full blue-to-orange gradient at 6โ12 months in a well-maintained tank. Morning light brings out the most intense coloration, and males display even brighter colors when competing for female attention.
Tank Mates
Hardy, active community fish. They pair well with other robust species of similar size. Their slightly alkaline, hard water preference makes them good companions for livebearers (platies, mollies, swordtails) and larger barbs. Too fast and boisterous for very small or timid fish like neon tetras.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my rainbowfish not colorful?
Juveniles are pale โ color develops with maturity (6โ12 months). Stress, poor water quality, cold temperatures, and inadequate diet also suppress color. Males kept with females display the most vibrant coloration.
