Tank Setup
- Tank size: 20 gallons minimum
- Lid: ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL. Firefish are the #1 jumpers in the marine hobby. Even small gaps in lids will result in carpet surfing. Use mesh screen or egg crate if you can't fully seal the top.
- Rock work: Provide rubble zones and small caves for bolt holes โ firefish dart into hiding when startled
- Flow: Moderate โ they hover in the current
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 75โ80ยฐF

Behavior
Firefish are shy, hovering fish that spend their time suspended in the water column near their bolt hole. When threatened, they dart headfirst into a crevice with incredible speed. They can be slow to acclimate to a new tank and may hide for days or weeks after introduction. Be patient โ they will eventually come out.
Tank Mates
Only with peaceful species. Firefish are easily bullied and will stop eating if harassed. Good companions include clownfish, royal grammas (with caution โ grammas can be territorial), gobies, and cardinalfish. Never keep two firefish together unless they are an established pair โ they are territorial toward their own species.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my firefish hiding?
New firefish commonly hide for 1โ3 weeks after introduction. This is normal. Ensure there are no aggressive tank mates bullying them. They will gradually gain confidence and spend more time in the open.
Can I keep two firefish together?
Only as an established mated pair. Two random firefish will fight, with the loser often jumping out of the tank or being harassed to death.
