Tank Setup
- Tank size: 20 gallons minimum
- Driftwood: Absolutely essential โ clown plecos are wood eaters. They rasp on driftwood constantly and derive nutrition from the wood fibers. Multiple pieces of driftwood should be provided.
- Hiding spots: Caves, crevices in driftwood, coconut shells. They are nocturnal and need dark hiding spots for daytime.
- Substrate: Sand or fine gravel
Wood-Eating Behavior
Clown plecos are xylivores โ organisms that eat wood. Unlike bristlenose plecos that primarily eat algae, clown plecos depend on driftwood for digestion and nutrition. A tank without driftwood will result in a malnourished, unhealthy clown pleco. Malaysian driftwood, mopani, and manzanita are all good choices.
Are They Good Algae Eaters?
Not particularly. While they may graze on some soft algae, they are primarily wood eaters and will not keep your tank algae-free. If you need algae control, get a bristlenose pleco, nerite snails, or otocinclus instead.
