Treatment Protocol for Ammonia Poisoning
EMERGENCY: Immediately do 50-75% water change with dechlorinated water. Dose Seachem Prime (double dose) to detoxify remaining ammonia for 24-48 hours. Add Seachem Stability or Fritz TurboStart 700 to boost beneficial bacteria. Continue daily 25-50% water changes until ammonia reads 0 ppm. Do NOT feed for 24 hours.
How to Identify This Condition
Look for these symptoms in your fish:
- Red or inflamed gills
- Gasping at surface
- Lethargy and loss of appetite
- Red streaks on body or fins
- Clamped fins
- Burns on skin (white patches)
Early detection is critical โ the sooner you begin treatment, the better the prognosis. Observe your fish daily during routine feeding for any behavioral or physical changes.
Root Causes
Understanding what caused the problem helps you prevent recurrence:
- Uncycled tank (new tank syndrome)
- Overstocking
- Dead fish or rotting food in tank
- Filter failure or cleaning filter in tap water
- Overfeeding
Recommended Medications
The following medications are effective against Ammonia Poisoning:
- Seachem Prime (detoxifier) โ follow manufacturer dosing instructions. Treat in a hospital/quarantine tank when possible to avoid disrupting your main tank's biological filtration.
- Seachem Stability โ follow manufacturer dosing instructions. Treat in a hospital/quarantine tank when possible to avoid disrupting your main tank's biological filtration.
- Fritz TurboStart 700 โ follow manufacturer dosing instructions. Treat in a hospital/quarantine tank when possible to avoid disrupting your main tank's biological filtration.
- API Ammo Lock โ follow manufacturer dosing instructions. Treat in a hospital/quarantine tank when possible to avoid disrupting your main tank's biological filtration.
Always have these medications on hand before you need them. See our quarantine tank guide for proper treatment setup.
Water Quality During Treatment
Maintain pristine water conditions during treatment. Perform 25% daily water changes using Seachem Prime as your water conditioner. Remove activated carbon from your filter during medication (carbon absorbs medications). Increase aeration with an air stone โ sick fish need extra oxygen. Monitor ammonia and nitrite daily with your test kit.
Recovery & Quarantine
This is a critical-severity condition. Prognosis depends heavily on how quickly treatment begins. Isolate affected fish immediately in a hospital tank. Continue treatment for the full 0-day protocol even if symptoms improve โ stopping early risks relapse. Monitor the main tank for additional cases.
Prevention
The best treatment is prevention. Follow these practices to reduce the risk:
- Always cycle tank before adding fish
- Don't overstock
- Never clean filter media in tap water
- Remove dead fish immediately
- Use Seachem Prime as water conditioner
- Test water weekly with API Master Kit
